The Remote Desktop Services (RDS) servers provides a virtual desktop for running a variety of Windows applications.


To connect to RDS:

  1. Open "Microsoft Remote Desktop".  You can download it from the Mac App Store here if you don't already have it.


  2. Click on the "New" button in the upper left of the "Microsoft Remote Desktop" window


  3. Name the connection, and enter one of RDS's or RDS2's server addresses in the "PC name" field:
    rds.dge.carnegiescience.edu
    rds.dge.ciw.edu
    rds.dpb.carnegiescience.edu
    rds.dpb.ciw.edu
    rds2.dge.carnegiescience.edu
    rds2.dge.ciw.edu
    rds2.dpb.carnegiescience.edu
    rds2.dpb.ciw.edu

    Note: On the Carnegie's Ethernet network, you can use "rds-su" without needing to connect to the VPN, otherwise just use "rds"
  4. Enter your username and password, with the username in the form of "AD\username"
  5. Close the "Edit Remote Desktops" window


  6. Double click on the newly created connection in the "Microsoft Remote Desktop" window


  7. On your first connection to RDS (or after a security update on RDS), you be asked to trust RDS' certificate.  You can select "Always trust" if you don't want to see this window again until the next certificate update.


  8. You are now connected to RDS
